Emily and The Woods - Live Review - London 23rd/24th January

This past week has been a pretty gig filled week, nothing out of the ordinary however, what is unusual is going to see the same artist twice in as many days.

However, lucky for me the two shows were a little different and the set list was even mixed about a bit, for my consideration I’m sure…!

So on Wednesday, London venue, Surya played host to a much anticipated night of live music, with headline act Emily & The Woods. Stood awaiting Emilys arrival, I found myself, beer in tow next to none other than Lucy Rose, having bumped into her on the stairwell.

Backed by two guitarists and a drummer, Emily captivated the audience from the first breath with vocal abilities rife to the likes of Elena Tonra.

As the set came to a close, packed like sardines, a very receptive audience urged Emily and her band to play a few more songs. Joined on stage by friend and fellow singer, Sam Brookes for an encore, their delightful vocal interplay proved the perfect closing number.

Throughout, Emily enthralled the audience with her infectious wit on stage in between songs. Vocalist Emily Wood never fails to engage her audience, with carefully crafted, emotive and honest lyrics carried by her infectious vocals. The next set, the following night at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, was no exception to the above.

With the crowd patiently awaiting the headline act, again in the form of Emily & The Woods, many a fan took to the floor cross-legged. Opening with her excellent ‘Steal His Heart’ Emily charmed the audience once more.

In perfect contrast, lead guitar flourishes from her backing instrumentalists including brother, Benedict add another dimension to the hushed vocals.

‘I used to tell a story before this next song but it got me into a rather sticky situation’ Emily says as she looks on into the crowd. Something is ushered about a crazy fan, to which Emily jokingly dismisses, insisting it’s a secret. An endearing yet humourous comment from the London based singer before the delightful ‘More Like Me’.

However, the highlight of the night was undoubtedly the final song, ‘Door Step’. With solo guitar riffs and a rather spontaneous, instrumental encore, the hauntingly beautiful sounds are an indication of the true talents of this young singer-songwriter.

After an incredible year which has seen ‘Steal His Heart’ hit almost 2 million views on Youtube, Emily and The Woods latest release, ‘Small Song‘ has received early support from the likes of Radio 1 and BBC6 Music. It’s the first of a series of new songs which will be released in the coming months and is available now as a free download here.

Set List:

Steal His Heart
Lonely Handed
Under Control
More like Me
Small Song
Arrows
Door Step

Top marks all round.
