Although no stranger to the music industry, it seems Bastille are about to be one of the biggest new names.
It comes as no surprise that one of Bastille’s
singles went to No1 on the Hype Machine chart, another appearing in Hollyoaks
and a third featuring as the soundtrack to Made in Chelsea.
Previous to forming the band in 2011, Smith wrote
songs with Nick Littlemore of Empire of the Sun, whilst signed to Elton John’s
management company. With a support to Emeli Sande and a sold out show at London’s
Koko, it seems everything is falling in place for Bastille.
Hailing from South London, the four piece band create
soaring melodies, displaying a sense of maturity and strength, much different
to the previous Dan Smith, writing beautifully composed workings as a young
singer-songwriter cooped up in his bedroom. Undoubtedly, a natural progression
from being a solo project to a full band, however the songs are not a
collaborative effort in terms of song writing.
Many of the works were produced in Smiths bedroom.
Turning to friends- the other members of the band were recruited to make the
sound better. Now, performing the songs live collectively as a four piece, ‘Bastille’
has emerged.
The electronic single, ‘Flaws’ encapsulates the
growth of the aforementioned Dan Smith producing from his bedroom to playing
some of the biggest festivals slots including Glastonbury. It’s an indication
of where Bastille is at as a band and what is to come from this promising
venture.
On the flipside, ‘Icarus’ is a rhythm-led, upbeat
song, described by Smith as pop music with some integrity and brains behind it.
The record was put out by Young and Lost Club, whom previously the likes of
Everything Everything and Noah & The Whale.
Having reached over 700,000 views on YouTube for the
single ‘Flaws’ it seems everyone wants to know more about this band I am sure
they’ll be a lot more where that came from in 2013.
