‘Colour The Atlas’ are four 19 year olds hailing from Swindon. Formally known as The Jess Hall Band, the band enjoyed several weeks on the BBC Radio 1 playlist last year having received early radio play from the likes of Fearne Cotton.
Having performed together for many years,
this startingly talented young band have reinvented themselves under a new name
and released a self-titled debut EP. At its peak, the EP reached no.2 in the
Singer/Songwriter charts on iTunes just hours after its release, pipped to the
post only by troubadour Jake Bugg.
Clearly an indication of their maturity, the
four piece from Swindon make the transition from ‘cute pop’ to a blend of contemporary
production with agile musicianship and complex songwriting, nu-folk with a
trip-hop twist.
With its staccato drums, layered synths and vocal partnership of Jess
and Alex, the record is a sonically intriguing introduction to the band under
their new name. The EP features a fusion of different genres, reflecting on
each of their personal styles.
Fresh off the back of playing support to Newton Faulkner, the band
embarks on their headline tour. Last night, the four piece opened the tour in
London to a well-captivated audience, certainly eager to hear more from this
promising talent.
Playing a mixture of old and new songs, the band started with Play Shy, their debut single under the
formal name last year. Enthralling the audience with their somewhat telepathic
harmonies, Alex and Jess played a selection of songs from their new EP
including The Maker, Satellites and Snow.
Other highlights included their cover of Angus & Julia Stone, A Book Like This and ‘Alex’s song’, Blue Eyes.
Colour The Atlas will be performing several live dates across this month
and are certainly a band not to be missed. Displaying glimmers of a bright
future, this act is set to be a well-known name of 2013.
