Sunday 22nd April

WOW.
Three is definitely the magic number and these three never cease to amaze.
Having seen them twice before I was hoping for another intimate night, at Brudenell Social, a place I had yet to visit. Criminal really since I live five minutes away but I guess I was waiting for the right act. I certainly didn't hesitate when I saw the lovely Staves had announced a headline tour.

Having seen them support Michael Kiwanuka at the wonderful Kazimier, it's safe to say they had me there and then, never have I had so much excitement for a support act. Having already downloaded their EP prior to the gig, I took great pride in mouthing the words to the songs, as I looked around to see a crowd, packed like sardines, with eyes fixated, jaws dropping, these girls really knew how to captivate an audience.

Having enjoyed it so much, the first thing I did was buy their EP on hard copy, as if it wasn't enough having it on my Itunes, I purchased two EP's- 'Mexico' and 'Live at Cecil Sharp House'. It was a lovely touch that all three sisters were at the Merch table, taking time out to talk to people and it was great to have a little chat about The Civil Wars and Ben Howard as well as them, of course.

Determined to pioneer this band, I set about telling my friends all about them. One friend in particular, Sam. Two days later I jumped with excitement when I saw The Staves were in Hebden Bridge, that night. Without hesitation, next thing I know, we were on a train, approaching a pub, we had no clue where we were let alone where the pub was.

Now I always say spontaneous trips are best and that night, it couldn't have been more true. The best live gig I had experienced. The atmosphere, the chemistry on stage, the display of utter talent and character, they so effortlessly bring to the stage.

Exactly two months since the Hebden Bridge gig and next up, Record Store Day and what better way to spend it than by closing the night listening to 'The Staves'. They also played Jumbo Records earlier in the day, however I resisted temptation. I was eagerly awaiting their set later in the day and I knew they wouldn't disappoint. Infact, I don't think disappoint comes in their dictionary. Every note, harmony, string and whistle, truly magical.

The Staves - Brudenell Social Club - 21st April 2012

As the room began to fill up, the first support act took to the stage, harmonica, piano and guitar in tow. Andy Doonan blends acoustic pop with indie and folk, a nice taster for the act ahead. His debut album, 'Lights and Mirrors', recorded with Pigeon Detectives producer, Andy Hawkins is out now, available on Amazon and Itunes.

Next, Christof Music, pronounced Kristof not Christ - of - music! Now, I was especially excited for this, having listened to his 'Honey Tears' EP prior to the gig, I had high expectations and they were met and pushed above the boundaries. Hailing from Holland, although after hearing his Scottish accent I am not so sure! This exciting act really was the perfect opener for the three sisters. Having previously supported Matthew & The Atlas, I predict the upcoming year will see Christof leave an impressive mark on the indie/folk scene here in the UK.

It was that time again. Here they were. The room started to fill up and people moved to the front, jumping from our seats we joined. The great thing about Emily, Jessica and Camilla is that, every gig is different but is never short of true delight. They bring so much to a performance, it is impossible not to be left completely captivated.

The steady interplay amongst these three idyllic voices, effortlessly beautiful. It is especially nice to see, in each and every venue I've been lucky enough to witness them play, they remain ever so laid back and humble. I've said it once and I will say it again, these three really have pinned the use of instrumentals and harmonic delicacy to a t. Here, at Brudenell it was no exception, the infectious harmonies left the audience enthralled and the addition of a guitarist and drummer, added to the sublime performance.

It was great to hear them perform a variety of songs, from both EP's in addition to some new ones from their EP, 'The Motherlode'. It's not often I am completely blown away but it really is hard to chose a best bit. Starting with 'The Motherlode', the title track to their newly released EP. Within the first twenty seconds, I knew this release was the best yet. The thing I love the most is that with each release, it is evident to hear the slight change in their sound, constantly improving and full of experimentation, enabling them to reach new boundaries and giving the music industry a breath of fresh air.

I also really enjoyed the newly styled 'Wisely & Slow', enabling the audience to get those feet tapping with the introduction of a high tempo drumming beat and electric guitar, following an exceptional acapella for the most part of the song, a true display of their talent.

However if I had to chose one song, it would have to be, 'Pay Us No Mind' from their current EP, 'Motherlode'. So effectively including the smooth strumming sounds of both guitar and drums mixed with the idyllic harmonies of all three sisters.

What a show. In my eyes, these three can do no wrong. Flipping fantastic.
On top of all this, I must close this review by adding how fun and kind these three are. It's always great to see bands meeting fans but these girls go above and beyond. Emily even enjoyed a Werthers during our conversation, kindly passed over by Sam, albeit our whisky and Werthers never quite materialised. I wish them all the best on their remaining UK and Ireland dates and I will be forever jealous to any of you that happen to experience them touring with Bon Iver. Hey one final comment, Emily, Camilla, Jess - give Justin a handshake from me and would it be too much to ask for a jam? The Staves and Bon Iver, imagine.

PS. I WANT TO BE A GROUPIE.
Undoubtedly band of the year.
Thanks to Andy Thompson who took the above on Saturday.
