Day 49 of 365
WOW. Ben Howard just blew my mind. Hands down the best live performance I have ever seen.
It was surreal. I have never been to a performance quite like it. We arrived with plenty of time to spare so managed to get front row seats on the balcony as we weren't feeling standing for 2 hours. Michael Cassidy came on stage - Ben's support act. He was lovely, really talented and quite humble - he asked to take a photo for his Mum! Anyway, I really liked his sound, not disimilar to that of Ben Howard but with a quite Scottish accent. Check him out, I think he has an EP out on Itunes.
Anyway...so a lot of waiting, but it was so worth it. The minute Ben Howard came on stage everyone was fixed. Not a sound to be heard, you could literally hear a pin drop. I for one have never experienced anything like this, attentive listening on a whole new level. At first, he seemed shy. As the night went on he found himself and after a few haggles from the audience you could really feel the special intimacy of this performance. The venue itself was small, only adding however to the acoustic quality we received. There are so many geat things about Ben and his band. The three of them have a great chemistry and you can really tell they're doing something they love.
His individual strumming, singing and jamming builds an exception folk style atmosphere. The venue, small but packed. Completely sold out. The crowd were lost in every song, that was with a few exceptions - being in Liverpool and all, there was a point everyone was deadly silent, Ben looking humble and smiling as he scanned the room- that was until a young boy shouted, 'Go ed Ben lad'. This was met by applause, cheers and a shy chuckle from Ben himself.
Another special moment was when the crowd began howling to the tune of 'The Wolves' urging Ben to play this next, albeit in a somewhat interesting tune from the mass of people.
Polished to the point of perfection this is a show not to be missed. I enjoyed it so much I came home and booked to see him again in February. I urge you to do the same.
Oh and did I mention he's super cute and surfs?
Perfect!
Night
