Day 174 of 365
Wednesday 22/2/12
Last night was incredible. Yet again.
The Staves - Trades Club, Hebden Bridge - 21st February 2012
Headline set
The love child, or three for that matter, of Fleet Foxes and Laura Marling.
As if seeing these three sisters once this week wasn't enough, about an hour before the last train left, myself and a fellow music lover decided on a spontaneous trip to the wonderful town of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, UK.
After asking a chatty local for directions, wayfinding through a park and crossing a stone bridge, we had arrived. Hesitating slightly before we approached, half an hour early. Only to be greeted by a happy ole chap who permanently stamped our hands with smiley faces - (yes mine is still there, faded it may be)
I liked this place already. Especially as we managed to catch a glimpse of 'The Staves' sound checking.
To start with the venue, a small unique one at that, a social club retaining a true 80's yorkshire style throughout. As soon as we walked into the bar and saw a man with a moustache to rival Charlie Chaplin, I knew we had made the right decision, albeit we were missing pancake day and the Brit Awards.
The support act kicked off and go by the name of 'The Folk'. Having previously toured with the likes of the fabulous Miles Kane and none other than Noel Gallagher, this group of talented musicians were everything I'd hoped for and more. Somewhat psychedelic with of mix of emotive vocals and catchy melodies, it's no wonder these guys have just landed the support slot for Gallagher's European leg.
With candlelit tables and a room quickly filling up creating an atmospheric setting, the audience eagerly awaited the brilliant Staves to take to the stage. I knew what the hype was about and to be quite frank I couldn't wait. Awaiting the display of genuine talent and character they so effortlessly bring to the stage.
Ever so laid back, the three sisters seem to have pinned the use of instrumentals and harmonic delicacy to a t.
Infact, these infectious harmonies are set to leave any audience enthralled and tonight at the Trades, was no exception. With Camilla's ability to play ukulele, Jessica's lead and Emily's idyllic vocals and undeniable talent in whistling (yes really!) this trio really are the ones to watch in 2012.
Having seen them twice now, I find it impossible to not become completely captivated by the trio originally hailing from Watford. I know I am not the only one, for the first words my friend uttered, the minute he heard the first chord, 'I am so glad you text me, I think I am in love'. Truth is, it's hard not to be.
The best bit, well there were a lot.
However, if I am to chose a few highlights from the set it would be the steady interplay amongst these three voices, effortlessly beautiful performing my favourite track off the new EP; Icarus.
Although, it was the acapella performance which i feel stole the show, yet again, captivating the audience with nothing but stripped back vocals in 'Wisely & Slow'.
Whatsmore, as if that wasn't enough, they were beckoned back with thanks to a few hecklers, an encore which saw them perform a cover of the 1960's classic, 'Silver Dagger'.
Not only do these three bring a breath of fresh air to the music scene, having toured with the likes of fellow folk duo, Civil Wars, Willy Mason and BBC Sound of 2012, Michael Kiwanuka, it's only a matter of time before these girls have a mantlepiece of awards to envy.
On top of all this, I must close this review by adding how humble, fun and kind these three are. Taking the time to talk to their fans, signing endless EP's and always managing to deliver a show stopping performance. Would it be too much to see them three times in as many months?
Goodbye student loan.
If you haven't already done so, I urge you to check them out.
Their EP, Mexico is out now.
